General Questions

How do I apply for a new or replacement Social Security number card?

If you cannot apply for a card online, you will need to show the required documents. We need to see different documents depending on your citizenship and the type of card you are requesting. See Learn What Documents You Need to find out what documents you will have to show. Fill out and print an Application for a Social Security Card; and take or mail your application and documents to your local Social Security office.

How do I change or correct my name on my Social Security number card?

If you legally change your name because of marriage, divorce, court order or any other reason, you must tell Social Security so you can get a corrected card. You cannot apply for a card online. There is no charge for a Social Security card. This service is free. The same applies once you receive the I-766 card, Employment Authorization Document (EAD), from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and bring required evidence.

How long will it take to get a Social Security card?

We will mail your Social Security card as soon as we have all of the necessary information. For Form I-765, we will issue your card as soon as the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) approves your employment authorization. Generally, you will get your card within 10-14 business days from the date your application is processed.

Can I get a different Social Security number if I am a victim of identity theft?

If you have done all you can to fix the problems resulting from misuse of your Social Security number and someone still is using it, we may assign you a new number.
